What SouthPark is built from
About six miles south of uptown around Fairview Road and Sharon Road, named for the mall that opened there in February 1970 on what had been Governor Cameron Morrison's farm. Mid-century ranch houses in the older subdivisions, and a growing amount of mid-rise condominium and townhouse stock built on concrete decks with engineered wood or tile over them.
A mix of settled owners and people who have been in Charlotte for eighteen months. This is where the metro's inbound moves tend to land first, which means a high proportion of the rugs here were bought somewhere else and got on a truck.
The SouthPark problem
A relocated rug has a bad first year, and almost nobody connects the two things. Wool is hygroscopic: it takes up and gives off moisture until it matches the air around it, and a rug that spent twenty years in a heated Midwestern or Northeastern house arrived here carrying very little water. Put it into a Charlotte summer, where the dew point sits in the sixties and seventies for months, and the fibre and the cotton foundation regain moisture steadily for the first year. Three things follow. The foundation relaxes, so a rug that lay flat in the old house starts to ripple in this one and old repairs that were stable begin to move. Set creases from the move take much longer to drop out than the owner expects, and every week they stay is another week the warps are flexing on a hard line. And anything dormant in the rug wakes up — an old pet accident that had been dry and odourless for a decade is a hygroscopic salt, and it starts pulling water out of Charlotte air and smelling again. None of that is the move's fault exactly; it is the climate the rug has just been handed.
