What Foxcroft is built from
South Charlotte between Myers Park and SouthPark, on land that was part of the Morrocroft country estate before the subdivisions reached it. Large post-war and mid-century houses on wide wooded lots, later ones considerably bigger, with hardwood through the main rooms and a great deal of mature canopy over the whole neighborhood.

The Foxcroft problem
Carpet beetles, which are not moths and do not behave like them. The adult beetle lives outdoors on flowering plants and feeds on pollen and nectar, so under a canopy like this one it is already in the garden; it comes in through a window screen, on cut flowers, or on a bunch of greenery brought inside, and it lays where there is keratin to eat. What hatches eats wool, silk and hair, and it prefers exactly the parts of the room nobody touches: under the sideboard, the strip beneath a sofa that has not moved in years, the underside of a rug against a skirting board. The tell is different from moth damage — you find small bristly cast skins and fine dust rather than webbing, and the grazing shows as scattered thin patches instead of one clean bare area. Because they arrive from outside rather than travelling with the rug, treating the rug alone does not finish it; the room, the window screens and the flowers have to be part of the fix. Turning the rug and looking under the furniture twice a year is what finds it before the foundation shows.
