What Elizabeth is built from
Charlotte's second-oldest streetcar suburb, growing from 1891 and built out hard after the trolley line was finished in 1902, taking its name from Elizabeth College. Bungalows, Foursquares and Colonial Revival houses on a walkable grid off Seventh Street and Elizabeth Avenue, with Independence Park — the city's first public park — at the middle of it and a closed tree canopy over most of the residential streets.

The Elizabeth problem
The spring cleaning ritual is what ruins rugs in Elizabeth. From late March into May the Piedmont lays down a heavy pollen load, it settles on the porch furniture and the cars and the rug in the hall, and the obvious move is to drag the rug out onto the driveway and hose it. That single decision costs more rugs here than pollen ever has. Uncontrolled water on an untested wool rug sets the dyes running — you often cannot see it until it dries, and by then the red has walked into the ivory permanently. The driveway is worse than the grass, because a concrete slab holds water and holds the fine reddish grit that washes down onto it, and a saturated rug lying face down on that wicks both back up. Then the drying: under a closed canopy in April, on a surface that stays damp underneath, a heavy wool rug will not dry through in a day or in three, and a foundation that stays wet that long in mild weather starts to smell before it is even back in the house. Pollen genuinely does need washing out rather than vacuuming off — it works down into the pile and holds moisture against the fibre — but it needs a dye test, controlled water and flat drying, not a garden hose.
