What Plaza Midwood is built from
Established in 1910 as a streetcar suburb, with the road layout drawn by the Oakland Land Company, running between Hawthorne Lane, The Plaza, Central Avenue and the Charlotte Country Club. Bungalows and small period-revival houses from the 1910s through the 1940s, a good many of them divided into apartments at some point in the middle of the century and put back together since.
One of the most mixed neighborhoods on the route: long-standing residents, renters, and a heavy concentration of vintage shops, antique dealers and estate sales along Central Avenue. Rugs arrive here secondhand far more often than they arrive new.
The Plaza Midwood problem
A rug with a history you do not know is a risk to the rug you already own. An estate-sale piece has been somewhere for years, and the two things it most often brings with it are insect eggs in the fringe and the folds, and old contamination in the foundation that has been dry and silent for a long time. Neither is visible from standing height. Laid down next to a rug you have kept clean, the second one gets infested from the first, and the owner concludes the house has a problem when what happened was a delivery. The third thing that travels is a bad repair: overcast edges done in the wrong weight, a hole filled with a patch cut from another rug and glued in, or a synthetic fringe machine-sewn onto a hand-knotted end — all of which look acceptable until the rug is washed and the adhesive or the mismatched tension announces itself. None of that is a reason not to buy the rug. It is a reason to have it looked at, washed and cleared before it goes on the floor rather than after, and to keep it rolled and away from the rest until then.
