Rug Cleaning in Davidson

Collection and delivery in Davidson are included. We take the rug back to the workshop, wash it properly, and bring it home.

The Houses

What Davidson is built from

A town at the top of Mecklenburg County, founded in 1837 around Davidson College and grown afterwards as a Piedmont railroad town, so the older stock runs from nineteenth-century village houses near the campus to early-twentieth-century cottages along the line, with newer lakeside and infill building around them.

Faculty, retirees and families who wanted a walkable town instead of a subdivision. Old houses with full-height attics, and enough moving in and out with the academic year to keep a steady flow of rugs going into storage.

Every Davidson rug is washed at the workshop, not in the room.
What We Find Here

The Davidson problem

The attic is where rugs die in Davidson, and it takes years rather than months. An unconditioned roof space in the Piedmont goes far above the outdoor temperature on a clear July afternoon, and Charlotte gets forty-odd days a year at ninety or above; a rug rolled up under that roof is being baked repeatedly. Wool loses moisture it needs at that heat and gets brittle, so the fibre breaks rather than bends and the rug sheds when it comes back down. Any adhesive in the rug goes first — the latex layer in a hand-tufted rug softens, then hardens off, and that is where delamination and the stale-glue smell come from. Plastic sheeting turns semi-liquid against the pile in that heat and can transfer onto it permanently. And warmth plus dark plus stillness is what wool-eating insects want, so an attic is not storage, it is a nursery with a heater. If a rug has to go away, it goes clean, rolled loose with the pile out, off the floor, and in conditioned space. A rug that has already done a few summers up there should be looked at before it is laid down, because the damage is in the foundation and does not show until somebody walks on it.

If that sounds like your rug, send the form and describe what you are seeing. We will tell you whether it needs the full treatment or not.
